Same sex weddings

Up until now, same sex couples could only have a 'commitment ceremony', that is, a ceremony with no legal effects, as there was no official registration.

On 7 December 2017, the House of Representatives voted, with an absolute majority, for the amendments to the Marriage Act 1961 to be passed.

The Bill received the Royal Assent on 8 December 2017 and at 1 minute past midnight, it was law.  Therefore, couples who have filled in and lodged a Notice of Intended Marriage on 9 December 2017, can legally marry on 9 January 2018. If you intend to get married some time in 2018, please start with your paperwork as soon as possible. Contact me on +61 2 95651516 or +61 412618936 for more information.

The amendments to the Marriage Act 1961  also included the recognition of all same sex marriages legally solemnised overseas.  All same sex couples who were married overseas are now, by law, recognised as 'married' in Australia.

Australia is the 26th country in the world that, as from 9 December 2017, acknowledges and recognises the right of couples of the same sex to marry on Australian soil.

It will be so beautiful to marry same sex couples! Love is love, it is not a matter of gender, it is a matter of feelings.

To date I have written and performed countless commitment ceremonies. I have every intention to continue doing them. But it will be very rewarding and emotional to be able to finally marry same sex couples.

I cannot wait!
